Mentoring Students of Color for Success, Retention, and Persistence

Universities are continuing to see increases in racial and ethnic diversity within their campus communities. However, students of color often feel excluded, invisible or hypervisible, and often report less satisfaction with their educational experiences. Students of color need access to mentors who can assist them in the navigating the campus culture to best ensure their success, retention, and persistence to graduation. Mentors should be equipped with knowledge about the various barriers and struggles that students of color face, including issues such as stereotype threat, imposter syndrome, and daily microaggresssions.

Understanding these barriers and providing strategies and resources to students is critical to their educational success. Furthermore, mentors must be ever-diligent in understanding their own identities and should be given training on basic mentoring skills to be the best support systems for students.

Please join Naomi Sigg as she helps participants assess their campus climate to better understand the experiences of students of color across campus, identify common difficulties faced by students of color, define their understanding of mentorship, and gain skills and tools to best assist students of color.
