SROs, School Police, and Private Security

In the wake of incidents of school violence that have occurred in recent years, schools are increasingly relying upon the use of school resource officers (SROs), school police, and other private security to help aid the safety of their buildings. This increase in security presence has raised a number of legal issues and resulted in significant litigation, including special education lawsuits. In light of increasing concerns regarding student privacy, the U.S. Department of Education issued formal guidance this spring regarding FERPA constraints on the sharing of personally identifiable student information with SROs.

Please join nationally recognized school law expert Erin D. Gilsbach, Esq., as she discusses the wide-ranging legal issues surrounding the use of SROs, school police, and school security. She will also address the relationship between schools and local police, and will provide guidance regarding referrals to law enforcement and effective drafting of memorandums of understanding (MOUs) between schools and local police forces.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

Just a sampling of what this webinar will cover:

  • What are some of the provisions that should and should not be included in MOUs with local law enforcement?
  • When should school administrators seek SRO involvement? Are there times that they should not?
  • What are the special education implications if a student engages in disability-related behaviors that result in SRO or law enforcement action?
  • When can and should school entities share student information with SROs, school police, and local law enforcement?
  • What training should schools ensure that their SROs or school police have?
  • How should schools create and manage disaster and emergency plans, and what engagement with law enforcement should be involved?
